Can We Predict Gun Politics?
Should politics play a part in gun ownership rights? Most of us on the pro-gun side would say no. Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, firearm legislation is a hot issue in American politics and media.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris made gun control a big part of their election platform in 2020. That came as no surprise given his almost 50 years of anti-gun politics, and her anti-gun agenda in California’s politics. What else came as no surprise is that they’re continuing to push a rabidly anti-gun agenda during their administration. How much they’ll be able to accomplish is yet to be seen, but they have some lofty – and frightening – goals in mind.
The Biden-Harris Administration has indicated that it would like to do the following:
- Ban “assault weapons” with no grandfather clause
- Ban “high capacity” magazines and impose fines for those who own them
- Expand the list of items regulated by the National Firearm Act
- Raise the tax on NFA items
- Create a national “one-gun-a-month” restriction
- Incentivize state “extreme risk” laws
- Repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act
- Give states incentives to set up gun licensing programs
- Ban online ammunition and gun parts sales
- Implement “universal background checks”
- Crack down on “rogue FFLs”
- … and so on…
In case it isn’t clear: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris hate gun owners. They hate you. This list could go on a lot longer, but I think you get the point.
Anti-Gun Cronies
Biden appointed failed Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland as U.S. Attorney General. Garland is on record stating that he is for gun bans and universal background checks.
David Chipman, former anti-gun lobbyist and ATF agent at the botched Waco siege, has been nominated to be the director of the ATF. While his confirmation process has not gone smoothly, his nomination has not been withdrawn. If Chipman is confirmed, the ATF will have one of the most rabid anti-gunners of all time at the helm.
Predicting the Future?
It’s impossible to predict the future, but we can make some pretty solid guesses based on Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ past performance and previously stated goals.
