FFL License Requirements

[Read Updated FFL License Requirement Article]

Many people are interested in getting their FFL license but then wonder, “Am I eligible?” The question is usually prompted in relation to age or getting in a bit of trouble in the past.

The guidelines put forth by the ATF in order to get a FFL license aren’t as stringent as one might believe. Of course, the ATF isn’t going to let a criminal get a license which allows them to buy and sell guns, but that time you ran a red light 5 years ago isn’t going to prevent you from getting your FFL either. The requirements for getting an FFL license are as follows:

  • The applicant must be 21 years of age or older.
  • The applicant (including in the case of a corporation, partnership, or association, anyone with the power to direct management and policies whether directly or indirectly) is not prohibited from transporting, shipping, or receiving firearms or ammunition in interstate or foreign commerce (i.e. your gun rights have not been restricted)
  • The applicant has not willfully violated any of the provisions or regulations of the Gun Control Act or any other firearms laws.
  • The applicant has not willfully disclosed incorrect information or willfully omitted pertinent information on the application
  • The applicant has premises in the state from which s/he plans to obtain licensure or will have such a premises in a reasonable amount of time, OR in the case of a collector, premises in the state in which s/he plans to conduct the collecting or will have such a premises in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Finally, the applicant certifies that s/he will follow all federal, state, and local laws.

There, in a nutshell, you have all of the requirements to obtain a FFL license. If you can purchase a hand gun, our experience is that our guides will work for you. For the full, fancy wording, you can see The Gun Control Act of 1968, Title 18 U.S.C Chapter 44 § 923.
