How to get FFL License in Idaho (ID)?

Do you want to know how to get your Idaho FFL in 2020? Are you intimidated by complex Federal paperwork, or just want a little help with the process? Not to worry! We’ve prepared this simplified guide to getting an Idaho FFL so you can better understand the processes involved, and more importantly where to get help when you hit a bumpy spot in the process.

Any FFL, including an Idaho FFL requires getting Federal, state and local licensing and legal requirements complied with. That can be as complex as submitting fingerprints and identifying documents, to buying a local business license. So let’s take a look at the 5 steps on how to get an Idaho FFL.

Step 1: Federal Requirements

There are a few things you need to get together before you file for your Idaho FFL. You’ll need a set of fingerprints for you and all other partners and some other identifying information. If you are confused as to how to submit this and other requested information, that’s no biggie. FFL123 customers get step by step instructions on this part.

Otherwise, you literally just need to be over 21 years old and legally able to own a gun. Broadly speaking that means as long as the below applies to you, then you should be good to go.

  • US citizen or permanent resident 21 or older.
  • No felony or domestic violence convictions.
  • No outstanding arrest warrants.
  • Not have been dishonorably discharged from the military.
  • No pending criminal charges.

Of course, you’ll also have to demonstrate to the ATF that you can operate the business you plan to at your chosen location. That means fulfilling state and local requirements. So let’s take a look at the other steps you need on how to get an Idaho FFL.

Step 2: State Requirements

The good news is that unlike many other states, Idaho does not have a specific state license for gun dealers. These are always just redundant to an FFL and usually serve to make money for the state and annoy decent FFL holders trying to deal with even more regulation.

If you want an Idaho FFL you will need to register your business with the state as you would with any business. You may also choose to incorporate your Idaho FFL business. That’s a decision you have to make for yourself, but FFL123 customers do get guidance at this step of the process too!

Step 3: Local Requirements

In nearly all cases, you’ll just need to get any local business licenses you need to conduct the kind of business you want to engage in and acquire a properly zoned location. Most of the time, this is pretty routine and without issue, especially in gun-friendly Idaho.

Naturally, zoning still matters. You won’t be running a full-scale machine shop in a quiet residential neighbourhood after all. Local authorities can help you with any zoning questions. The biggest problem Idaho FFL holders might encounter involve operating a small home based FFL. Pretty much most of the time this isn’t a problem. Nearly all residential areas outside of HOA’s allow some sort of light retail or business activity. You might have to show that you won’t have disruptive signs or traffic, but that isn’t too hard. This is where most home based FFL’s have trouble, but not to worry – FFL123 specializes in helping home based FFL’s get started and we can help you bust through the thickest of red tape!

Step 4: Business Requirements

At this point, you are almost home free. You’ve got all the paperwork in order, all your licenses, and your shiny new Idaho FFL. Good to go, right? Well maybe? Every storefront, every home based FFL, every machine shop is different. You may have to deal with local regulations about signs, or waste disposal, or simply need to get a good security system, set of fixtures, and figure out how digital you want to make your business.

All these little things can trip up a new business before it even gets off the ground, and can turn a running start into a slow jog. The good news for you though, is that the team of industry experts at FFL123 offer our customers expert guidance here too. Just ask us! In fact, we’ve got some great tips on digitizing your bound books and 4473’s…

Step 5: Industry Connections

Your Idaho FFL won’t do you much good without inventory and supplies. The gun industry tends to distribute guns and ammo through large distributors who can efficiently handle large volumes of merchandise all at once and distribute it from a central point. Gun manufacturers tend to prefer to deal in massive wholesale transactions, rather than a bunch of little sales to FFL holders.

However, not all distributors will do business with all FFL holders. Some require a brick and mortar  storefront and refuse to do business with home based FFL holders, regardless of their sales volume. Others require large minimum purchases, or a certain volume of sales. And naturally limited run or high demand guns never seem to trickle down to the little dealers from these kinds of distributors.

If you are a volume dealer, great. If not you might find getting guns and merchandise tough. But, FFL123 has our customer’s backs here too! When you buy our FFL license kit, we’ll provide an up to date list of distributors who will work with FFL holders of any size!
