For most shooters and gun owners, the idea of having their own FFL is a bit of a dream. Basic Eligibility Requirements for an FFL

First, let’s cover the basics. To obtain an FFL, you must meet a certain set of standards. This isn’t exactly difficult for a law-abiding citizen. Essentially, if you can buy a gun, you can get an FFL. Here are the standards according to the ATF:

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Is not prohibited from owning or possessing firearms (Don’t be a felon or have domestic violence offense, etc.)
  • Has not willingly violated the Gun Control Act of 1968
  • Has not willingly failed to disclose information or falsified information on their FFL application
  • Has a premises to conduct business (Your home is eligible as a premises)

There are also basic requirements at the state and local level (such as business licenses and zoning regulations), but those vary widely, so that’s something you’d be best in researching for your specific state and locality.

How a Home-Based FFL Benefits You

What exactly can an FFL do for you? Glad you asked! There are a wide variety of benefits for the Everyday Joe or Jane.

Of course, the biggest benefit most gun guys and gals want is the ability to have firearms shipped directly to your home. No more gun shop runs and transfer fees. An FFL allows you to receive and ship firearms at your home – or wherever you ultimately decide to make your place of business. This is beneficial to not only serious collectors, but also to gun buyers just looking to save money.

Having an FFL allows you to take advantage of internet flash sales and deals on auction sites. You won’t lose whatever money you saved in transfer fees because you can have it shipped directly to your home. Say goodbye to having to calculate shipping costs and transfer fees in order to figure out if something is really a deal or not.

    Hi!
I’m so glad I found your article.
1 quick question- Am I able to order, receive shipped gun parts & assemble myself, an AR— just being a legal gun owner in the State of Louisiana?
No intentions to sell this assembled AR— only for my personal use. I will be assembling it. Am I in legal bounds for this?
