Straw Purchases

Straw Purchases – Better Education Helps Avoid

An unfortunate occurrence in the firearms business is the act of straw purchasing. A straw purchase is when the actual purchaser of the firearm is unable to purchase the weapon him/herself because of the inability to pass a background check and thus has someone else do so for them. If a customer walks into your store and says blatantly that they are purchasing the gun for someone who cannot do so themselves, you should not go through with the sale.

Holding a FFL license is like being an extension of the ATF. There is no …

How Closely is “Big Brother” Watching?

They’re watching you. Closely. Obama knows about every gun you buy!! Well, sort of. Actually, no, not at all. There is a common misconception floating around that every time someone purchases a gun from a FFL dealer, the serial number of the gun is put into a registry with the purchaser’s name during the background check. However, this is not true! It’s easy to see how the misconception could occur. The customer fills out the Form 4473 with all of their personal information, the dealer goes into a back room to make …

Firearms transfer?

Firearms transfer?

This is a question we get asked frequently and a term we can sometimes take for granted. A transfer, in a nutshell, is a physical hand-over of a firearm. For a FFL dealer, it means that your customer fills out the ATF Form 4473, you run the NICS background check, and upon a “proceed” decision, can then give the firearm to the customer. This is going to be what the ATF is referring to when asking you how many transfers you’ve done.

The act of doing a transfer is something that many FFL dealers build …
